Keeping Your Cool With Your Child
Every parent has moments they’re not proud of. When stress builds and emotions run high, pausing can make a big difference for you and your child.
When you feel overwhelmed, pause and try one of these strategies:
- Breathe and count slowly to 10 (or 20).
- Close your eyes and imagine how your words might sound to your child.
- Check in with yourself: What’s really upsetting me right now?
- Give everyone space to calm down; name the feeling and take a short break.
- Take an adult time-out: step away if it’s safe to do so.
- Reach out: call or text someone who can support you.
- Move your body: take a short walk or stretch.
- Reset your senses: splash cool water on your face, take a warm shower, or turn on music.
- Write it out: jot down calming or encouraging words and save them for later.
After the Moment Passes
No parent is calm all the time. What matters most is repair. Take responsibility, apologize if needed, and think about what might help next time. Showing self-compassion teaches your child that mistakes can be repaired and emotions can be managed.
